What’s the difference between yoga and Pilates?
Yoga is a much older practice. Pilates was developed by Joseph H. Pilates while he worked as an orderly helping World War I patients rehabilitate.
Yoga usually holds poses. Pilates most often uses flowing exercises and repetitions.
Both yoga and Pilates strengthen the body, esp. the core (torso).
Both can increase flexibility.
Both focus on breathing, but the breathing pattern is different. Yogic breathing is in and out through the nose; Pilates breathing is in through the nose, out through the mouth. Breath control helps to reoxygenate the muscles while you work.
Both focus on balance and concentration.
Yoga initially inspired by grace of animals; Pilates inspired by physical therapy and dance.
